How to show up in Google AI Mode
By the Pickgap team · Updated Oct 15, 2026 · 4 min read
AI Mode is Google's conversational search. It splits a question into many related searches (query fan-out), reads the results and Google's business data, and writes one answer. The work to be named is the same as for Search and AI Overviews, with more weight on detail: pages and profiles that answer the specific follow-up questions people ask.
What AI Mode does differently
AI Mode is a separate tab in Google Search where people ask longer questions and follow up, like a chat. Google describes its main technique as query fan-out: it breaks the question into subtopics, runs many searches at once, and combines what it finds. For "a kid-friendly dentist in Denver that's open Saturdays and takes Delta Dental", AI Mode may search for pediatric dentists in Denver, Saturday hours, insurance networks and reviews mentioning children, all at once.
For local questions, AI Mode also uses Google's own business data, the same Business Profile information that powers Maps, and often shows places with their ratings next to the answer.
Google's guidance for site owners covers AI Mode and AI Overviews together: no special requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet.
What that means for you
Fan-out rewards detail. A question with four conditions is answered by businesses whose public information covers those conditions. If your hours, insurance, services and specialties aren't written anywhere Google can read, you can't match the specific question, even if you'd be a great fit.
One question, many searches
Here is how one realistic question breaks apart, and where the answer to each part usually lives:
| Part of the question | What AI Mode may search for | Where it finds the answer |
|---|---|---|
| "kid-friendly dentist" | pediatric dentists in Denver | Business categories, your services page, reviews that mention children |
| "in Denver" | dentists near the searcher | Your address, service area, the city named on your site |
| "open Saturdays" | Saturday dental hours Denver | Profile hours, hours written on your website |
| "takes Delta Dental" | Delta Dental dentists Denver | Your insurance page, insurer directories |
A practice that covers all four parts in places Google can read is a candidate for the whole question. A practice that covers two is easy to leave out.
Step 1: Fill in the details Google can read
- Business Profile: categories, hours, holiday hours, services, attributes (like "kid-friendly", "wheelchair accessible", "online appointments"), and a description that says what you're known for. See the Business Profile guide.
- Website: a page for each main service, with the details people filter on: price ranges, insurance, languages, same-day availability, areas served.
- FAQ: the follow-up questions customers actually ask, answered in a sentence or two each. See FAQ pages for AI search.
Step 2: Make reviews describe what you do
AI Mode can summarize review themes. Reviews that mention the service and the situation ("fixed my AC the same day in July") give it something specific to match. You can't script reviews, but you can ask about a specific visit: "Would you mind sharing how the emergency appointment went?" See how to get more Google reviews.
Step 3: Cover the sub-questions on the wider web
Fan-out searches pull in directories, local news, forums and comparison pages. Being present and accurate on the sites that rank for your sub-topics (insurance directories for clinics, licensing boards for contractors, legal directories for lawyers) widens the set of searches where you show up. See the directories AI cites.
Step 4: Keep everything consistent
When AI Mode combines a dozen searches, conflicting details (two phone numbers, old hours on one directory) create doubt. Fix mismatches across your profile, website and listings. See NAP consistency.
Step 5: Write for the follow-up
People use AI Mode as a conversation. After "best HVAC company in Phoenix" comes "which of those offer financing?" or "who can come today?". Each follow-up is another round of searches. Businesses that state financing options, same-day service and warranty terms on their site stay in the conversation; those that don't drop out at the second question. List the five follow-ups your phone staff hear most and make sure each one is answered in writing.
Measuring AI Mode
AI Mode answers change with the wording of the question and the searcher's location. Test with the specific, multi-condition questions your customers ask, not just "best [trade] in [city]", and repeat them. Pickgap includes AI Mode in every scan, alongside ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews.
Questions
- Is AI Mode the same as AI Overviews?
- No. AI Overviews appear on top of normal results for some searches. AI Mode is a separate, conversational view that runs more searches per question and supports follow-ups. Both are part of Google Search and follow the same site-owner rules.
- Does AI Mode show in Search Console?
- Google includes AI Mode clicks and impressions in Search Console's web search totals. It doesn't report whether your business was named in the answer text.
