Google Business Profile for AI search: a checklist
By the Pickgap team · Updated Oct 15, 2026 · 3 min read
Google's AI surfaces, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini, read your Google Business Profile directly when they answer local questions. A complete, accurate profile with the right categories, real hours, listed services, relevant attributes and a steady flow of reviews gives them the details they need to match you to specific questions.
Why the profile matters more now
For classic search, your Business Profile decided where you appear on the map. For Google's AI surfaces, it's also a source of facts the AI quotes: what you do, when you're open, where you serve, what customers say. Google says local results depend on relevance, distance and prominence. A complete profile improves relevance (Google knows what you do), and reviews and mentions build prominence.
The checklist
Name
Use your real-world business name, exactly as on your signage and website. Adding keywords or a city ("Smith Dental - Best Dentist Tampa") breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
Categories
- Pick the most specific primary category that describes your main business: "Pediatric dentist" rather than "Dentist" if that's what you are.
- Add secondary categories only for services you really offer. Google allows up to 9 additional categories; more isn't better if they're a stretch.
- Compare with the businesses AI names most in your area. If they all use a category you don't, check whether it fits you.
Address or service area
- Storefront businesses: an exact address that matches your website.
- Service-area businesses (plumbers, cleaners, movers): hide the address if customers don't visit, and list the cities or areas you serve. See AI search for service-area businesses.
Hours
Regular hours, plus special hours for holidays. Wrong hours are one of the most common reasons people complain, and AI answers to "open now" questions depend on them.
Phone and website
One main phone number, the same one on your website. Link the website field to your homepage or the right location page, not a booking widget or social profile.
Services and products
List every main service with a short, plain description. Use the words customers use: "emergency AC repair", "teeth whitening", "will drafting". These are the terms AI matches against specific questions.
Attributes
Attributes answer the conditions people add to questions: wheelchair accessible, online appointments, women-owned, languages spoken, free estimates. Fill in every one that's true.
Description
Up to 750 characters. Say what you do, where, for whom and what makes you different, in plain words. No links or promotional fluff.
Photos
Real photos of your premises, team and work, added regularly. They don't need to be professional; they need to be yours.
Reviews
Ask every happy customer, and reply to every review. See how to get more Google reviews and how to respond to reviews.
Keeping it accurate
- Check your profile once a month. Anyone can suggest edits, and Google sometimes accepts them.
- Update hours before holidays, not after.
- When you move, change phone numbers or rebrand, update the profile first, then your website and listings. See NAP consistency.
What the profile can't do alone
A perfect profile doesn't guarantee that AI names you. AI Overviews and AI Mode also read websites, directories and articles, and ChatGPT and Perplexity mostly rely on sources outside Google. The profile is the foundation; reviews, listings and your website do the rest. Run a free check to see which AI surfaces name you today.
Questions
- Do Google Business Profile posts help AI visibility?
- Posts keep your profile active and can highlight offers or services, but there's no evidence they carry much weight on their own. Spend the time on reviews, services and accurate hours first.
- What if I don't have a Google Business Profile?
- Create and verify one. Without it, Google's AI surfaces have very little structured information about your business, and you'll be missing from map results entirely.
