How does Google AI Mode pick local businesses?
By the Pickgap team · Updated Oct 15, 2026 · 1 min read
AI Mode breaks a question into many related searches (query fan-out), combines the results with Google's business data such as categories, hours, ratings and reviews, and writes an answer naming the businesses that best match every part of the question. Detailed, consistent information across your profile, website and listings is what lets you match.
The short version of how it works
Google has described AI Mode's core technique as query fan-out. For a question like "a vet in Plano who sees rabbits and is open Sunday", AI Mode runs several searches at once: vets in Plano, exotic pet vets, Sunday hours, reviews mentioning rabbits. It combines what it finds, including Google's place data, and writes one answer.
What it looks at
- Business data: your Business Profile's categories, services, hours, attributes, rating and review count.
- Reviews: both the numbers and what reviewers say.
- Web pages: your site and the directories, lists and articles that rank for each sub-search.
- Distance: for "near me" questions, how close you are to the searcher.
Why detail wins
Each condition in the question is a separate test. A business that publishes its Sunday hours, lists exotic pets as a service and has reviews mentioning rabbits passes all of them. One that's just as good but doesn't say so passes fewer, and is easy to leave out.
What to do
- Fill in every relevant Business Profile field, especially services and attributes.
- Give each main service its own page on your site. See service pages for AI search.
- Answer the follow-up questions customers ask in an FAQ. See FAQ pages for AI search.
- Keep details consistent everywhere.
