Does Google Business Profile affect AI Overviews?

Yes. For local questions, Google's AI surfaces draw on Google's own business data, the information in your Business Profile, alongside web pages. Your categories, services, hours, attributes, rating and reviews all help Google decide whether you match a question. A complete, accurate profile is the single most useful step for Google's AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini.

How the profile feeds the AI

AI Overviews often appear above or beside a list of places from Google Maps for local questions, and AI Mode and Gemini can show place results with ratings and hours. That data comes from Business Profiles. The written answer itself can also reflect profile details, such as hours, services or what reviews mention.

Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence. Your profile drives relevance (what you do), sets your location, and carries prominence signals like reviews.

The fields that matter most

FieldWhy it matters for AI answers
Primary categoryDecides which questions you're relevant for at all
ServicesMatches specific requests ("teeth whitening", "drain cleaning")
Hours and special hoursAnswers "open now", "Saturday" and holiday questions
AttributesMatches conditions like "wheelchair accessible" or "online appointments"
Reviews and ratingProminence, and the themes AI summarizes

What the profile can't do alone

The profile isn't the only input. AI Overviews and AI Mode also read websites, directories and articles, and they often cite third-party pages. A perfect profile with few reviews and no mentions elsewhere will still be outweighed by a competitor with a strong presence everywhere.
