Can you pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. There's no way to buy a place in ChatGPT's recommendations. OpenAI has said that where it shows ads, they're labeled and kept separate from answers, and don't influence what ChatGPT recommends. Anyone selling guaranteed placement in ChatGPT's answers is selling something they can't deliver.
Answers aren't for sale
ChatGPT's recommendations come from what it finds on the web when it searches. There's no placement fee, no sponsored slot inside the answer, and no form for businesses to submit themselves.
OpenAI has begun showing ads in ChatGPT for some users. It has said those ads are clearly labeled, shown separately from the answer, and don't change what ChatGPT says. An ad next to an answer isn't the same as being recommended in it.
Other AI surfaces
- Google shows ads in and around AI Overviews in some markets, marked as sponsored. They're separate from the businesses the AI itself names.
- Perplexity has tested sponsored follow-up questions, labeled as sponsored, not paid placement in answers.
What paying for can help
You can pay for work that raises your chances: better listings, a review program, website improvements, outreach to local lists. That's how agencies and consultants help. The difference is honesty: they can improve the evidence AI reads, not buy the outcome.
Red flags
Be wary of anyone who:
- Guarantees you'll be "number one" or "recommended" in ChatGPT.
- Claims a special relationship with OpenAI or Google.
- Sells fake reviews, bulk directory spam or pages with hidden instructions for AI.
These either don't work, or work briefly and then cost you trust and listings. See do I need a GEO agency?
