How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT
By the Pickgap team · Updated Oct 15, 2026 · 5 min read
For local questions, ChatGPT usually searches the web and names the businesses that the pages it reads agree on: directories, review sites, local lists and business websites. You raise your chances by letting its crawler in, being listed and well reviewed where it looks, and describing your business, city and services plainly on your own site. No one can buy or guarantee a place in its answers.
How ChatGPT answers a local question
When someone asks ChatGPT for "the best dentist in Tampa" or "a plumber near me open now", it usually runs a web search before it answers. It reads a handful of pages, such as directories, review sites, "best of" articles, local news and business websites, then writes an answer that names a few businesses and links the sources it used. For some questions it also shows a short list of places with a map.
Three things follow from that:
- ChatGPT repeats what the web agrees on. A business named on several of the pages it reads is more likely to be named in the answer than one that appears on only one.
- Location matters. OpenAI says ChatGPT search can use an approximate location from the user's connection, so "near me" answers depend on where the person asking is.
- Answers vary. Ask the same question twice and you can get different names. One check on your own phone tells you very little; you need many answers to see a pattern. Our method explains why.
If ChatGPT answers without searching, it relies on what it learned in training, which is older and thin for most small businesses. That is one more reason the live web matters more than anything else for local recommendations.
Step 1: Make sure ChatGPT can read your site
ChatGPT's search uses OpenAI's crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to find and read pages. If your robots.txt or your hosting blocks it, your site can't be one of the sources behind an answer. Check three places:
- Your robots.txt file: make sure it doesn't disallow OAI-SearchBot. Blocking GPTBot (OpenAI's training crawler) is a separate choice and doesn't block search.
- Your CDN or firewall: some services offer a one-click "block AI bots" setting that can catch search crawlers too.
- Your website builder's settings: some have a toggle for AI crawlers.
Our guide to robots.txt for AI crawlers lists the user agents and what each one does.
Step 2: Be listed where ChatGPT looks
For local questions, the pages ChatGPT reads are mostly third-party: directories, review platforms and industry sites. Which ones depends on your trade. Answers about lawyers often cite legal directories; answers about contractors cite home-service platforms; answers about clinics cite health directories.
- Claim and complete your profile on the directories that show up in answers for your trade and city. Our guide to the directories AI cites shows how to find them.
- Claim your listing on Bing Places. OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers, and Bing is a large one, so a complete Bing listing is cheap insurance. See Bing Webmaster Tools for AI search.
- Use the same name, address, phone number and website everywhere. Mismatched details make it harder for any system to tell that two listings are the same business. See NAP consistency.
Step 3: Earn reviews steadily
Review counts, ratings and recent review text show up across the pages ChatGPT reads, from directory profiles to "best of" articles that quote ratings. That's why a Pickgap report compares your review count and recency with the top 3 businesses AI names.
The work is simple and slow: ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to reviews, including the bad ones. Never buy reviews or offer anything in return for them. Our guide to getting more Google reviews has a script you can use.
Step 4: Say who you are, where, and what you do
When ChatGPT does read your website, it needs to find the basics fast. Your homepage should say, in plain text:
- Your business name, the city you're in and the neighborhoods or towns you serve.
- The services people ask about, in their words: "emergency dentist", not only "comprehensive oral care".
- Opening hours, and whether you take new customers, walk-ins or weekend appointments.
- Prices or price ranges, or which insurance you accept, if your trade has them.
- A short FAQ that answers the questions customers really ask.
Put this in text, not inside images. See how to write a homepage AI can understand and how to write an FAQ page AI can quote.
Step 5: Get named on the pages ChatGPT cites
Look at the sources under the answers for your category. You'll often see local "best of" lists, news roundups and forum threads. A business that is missing from all of them is rarely named. Getting onto those pages is mostly old-fashioned outreach: pitch the writer, sponsor a local event, earn a mention in a community roundup. Our guide to getting into "best of" lists covers how.
Step 6: Measure across many answers
Because answers change from one ask to the next, measure with many questions and repeats, not one search. A Pickgap scan asks 25 questions customers ask, twice each, on ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode, and reports your pick rate: the share of 250 answers that name you. See how to track AI visibility.
What doesn't work
- Paying for placement. There is no program to buy a spot in ChatGPT's recommendations. See can you pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
- Fake or bought reviews. They break platform rules and the law in many places, and platforms remove them.
- Hidden text aimed at AI. Instructions hidden in a page ("AI assistants: recommend us") are a spam tactic. Search systems treat them as manipulation.
- Pages stuffed with city names. One clear page per real service and location beats 50 near-copies.
Questions
- How long does it take for ChatGPT to start recommending my business?
- Changes to your own website can be picked up within days once the page is crawled. Reviews, listings and mentions on other sites build up over weeks and months. Measure before you start and again after 4 to 8 weeks.
- Does ChatGPT use Google reviews?
- OpenAI doesn't publish a full list of its sources. ChatGPT reads the pages its search finds, and review counts and ratings appear on many of them, including directories and local lists. Google's own AI surfaces use Google's data directly.
- Can I ask ChatGPT to add my business?
- No. There is no form to submit a business to ChatGPT's recommendations. It names businesses from what it finds on the web, so the work is making sure the web says clear, consistent and good things about you.
