Why doesn't ChatGPT recommend my business?
By the Pickgap team · Updated Oct 15, 2026 · 2 min read
Usually because the pages ChatGPT reads when it searches don't mention you, or mention competitors more convincingly. The common causes are missing or incomplete listings on the directories it cites, fewer and older reviews than the businesses it names, a website that doesn't clearly say what you do and where, or a site that blocks its crawler.
The usual causes
ChatGPT doesn't rank businesses on a list it keeps. For a local question, it searches the web, reads a handful of pages and names the businesses those pages support. If you're missing, one or more of these is usually why:
- You're not on the pages it reads. The directories, review sites and "best of" lists cited for your trade and city don't list you, or list you without reviews or details.
- Competitors have more evidence. More reviews, more recent reviews, more mentions in local lists and news.
- Your website is vague. It doesn't name your city, your services or your hours in plain text, so it doesn't match specific questions.
- Your details conflict. Different names, phone numbers or addresses across listings make it harder to connect the mentions to one business.
- Its crawler is blocked. Your robots.txt, CDN or website builder blocks OAI-SearchBot, so your own site can't be a source.
- The question doesn't fit. You may be named for some questions ("emergency dentist") and not others ("best cosmetic dentist").
How to find out which one
Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, with your city, several times each, and look at two things: who it names, and the sources it cites. Then compare: are you listed on those sources? How do your reviews compare with the businesses named? Our step-by-step check walks through it.
A Pickgap report does the same comparison across hundreds of answers and turns the gaps into a ranked fix list, each with the evidence behind it.
What to do next
Start with the biggest gap. For most local businesses that's either listings on the directories ChatGPT cites or the review gap with the top competitors. The full playbook is in how to get recommended by ChatGPT.
