AI share of voice

AI share of voice is your share of all the business mentions in AI answers for a set of questions, compared with your competitors. If the top five businesses and you are mentioned 200 times in total and you account for 20 of those mentions, your share of voice is 10%.
How it differs from pick rate
- Pick rate asks: in what share of answers am I named?
- Share of voice asks: of all the mentions of businesses like mine, what share are mine?
A business can have a decent pick rate in a category where every answer names many businesses, yet a small share of voice because competitors are named even more. Share of voice is a competitive measure; pick rate is an absolute one.
How it's calculated
Count mentions of your business and of each competitor across the same set of answers. Divide your mentions by the total. Many reports limit the comparison to the top competitors, for example the top five, so the number isn't diluted by businesses named once.
How to use it
- Track it over time: a rising share means you're gaining ground relative to competitors, even if the overall number of mentions changes.
- Compare by AI surface: your share may be strong on one surface and weak on another.
- Find who's taking the share: the competitor with the largest share is your main rival in AI search, and not always the one you expect.
