How many businesses does AI recommend at once?
By the Pickgap team · Updated Oct 15, 2026 · 1 min read
Usually a short list: often 3 to 10 businesses, depending on the AI surface, the question and the category. Broad questions in big cities get longer lists; specific questions get shorter ones. Because the list is short and changes from one answer to the next, the useful measure is how often you're named across many answers, not whether you appeared once.
Why the list is short
An AI answer is written for someone who wants a decision, not a directory. So assistants tend to name a few strong options with a reason for each, rather than every business in town. Google's classic local results showed about three places at the top; AI answers are similar in spirit, though the exact number varies.
What changes the number
- The surface. Some assistants write longer lists with short descriptions; others name two or three and explain them.
- The question. "Best restaurants in Chicago" invites a long list; "pediatric dentist in Oak Park open Saturdays" narrows it.
- The category and city. Crowded categories in big cities produce more names; small towns may produce one or two.
- The run. Ask again and the list can change.
What it means for you
When only a few businesses are named, being the sixth-best known business in your category can mean being named in almost no answers. The gap between the most-named business and the rest is often large. That's why Pickgap reports your pick rate, the share of answers that name you, next to the most-picked competitor's: the distance between the two is the gap to close. See the pick rate.
How to get onto the short list
Be the business that the most sources agree on: reviews, listings on the sites AI cites, local mentions, and a website that clearly matches the question. See how to get recommended by ChatGPT.
