What to do if AI recommends your competitor instead of you

Study the competitor the way AI sees them: their review count and recency, the directories and lists that name them, what their website says, and the sources cited in the answers that pick them. The differences are your fix list. Close the biggest gaps first, then measure again in 4 to 8 weeks.

Step 1: Confirm it's a pattern

One answer naming a competitor means little. Ask the same questions several times on several AI surfaces. If the same competitor comes up again and again while you don't, that's a pattern worth acting on.

Step 2: Compare what AI sees

SignalThemYou
Google reviews (count, last 90 days, rating)
Directories cited in answers where they appear
"Best of" lists and news mentions
Homepage: city, services, hours, prices or insurance named?
Dedicated pages for the services in the questions
Consistent name, address and phone everywhere

Fill it in honestly. The rows where they're ahead are why AI prefers them.

Step 3: Check the sources

Look at the pages cited in the answers that name the competitor. Each one that mentions them and not you is a specific, fixable gap: a directory to join, a list editor to pitch, a review platform to build.

Step 4: Close the biggest gaps first

Usually, in this order:

  1. Listings on the directories cited most often.
  2. The review gap: count and recency.
  3. Homepage and service pages that state the facts.
  4. Outreach to the lists and press that name them.

Step 5: Compete on specifics

You may not beat a dominant competitor on "best dentist in Tampa" quickly. You can often win specific questions sooner: "dentist in South Tampa open Saturdays", "Spanish-speaking pediatric dentist in Tampa". Make sure every specific thing you do well is written down where AI can read it.

Don't

Don't post fake negative reviews about competitors, or fake positive ones about yourself. It's against platform rules and the law, and it tends to be found.

A Pickgap report shows the competitors AI picks most, with their pick rates, and compares you with the top three on reviews, sources and website basics.
