Why does ChatGPT give different answers each time?

Because each answer is generated fresh. The model picks words with some randomness, the web search behind it can return slightly different pages, and small differences in wording, location or account settings change the result. That's normal, and it's why AI visibility has to be measured across many answers rather than one search.

Where the variation comes from

Generation. Language models write one word at a time, choosing among likely options with a small amount of randomness. Two answers to the same question can name different businesses, or the same ones in a different order.

Search. When ChatGPT searches, it may run slightly different queries and get different pages back. A different set of sources means a different answer.

Context. Your location, your account's memory and custom instructions, and earlier messages in the chat all shape the answer.

Wording. "Best dentist in Tampa" and "good dentist in Tampa for my kids" are different questions to an AI, with different answers.

What it means for your business

One search on your phone is a single sample. If ChatGPT named you once, you might be named often or rarely. If it skipped you once, the same. To know where you stand, you need to ask the questions customers ask, several times each, and count.

That count is the pick rate: the share of answers that name you. A business named in 40% of answers is in a very different position from one named in 5%, even though both might "show up" in a single test. See the pick rate.

How much variation is normal

It depends on the question and the category. For questions where one business is clearly the best-known, answers are stable. For crowded categories in big cities, they vary a lot. Pickgap reports a noise range with every pick rate, based on resampling the answers, so you can tell a real change from a random one. See how we measure.
