How to get your business recommended by Gemini

By the Pickgap team · Updated Oct 15, 2026 · 4 min read

Gemini answers local questions using Google Search and, often, Google Maps data. So the businesses it names are mostly those with strong Google signals: a complete Business Profile, plenty of recent reviews, and a website and listings that clearly match the question. The work overlaps almost entirely with local SEO and AI Overviews.

Where Gemini's local answers come from

Gemini is Google's AI assistant app. When someone asks it for a recommendation, it usually grounds the answer in fresh information: Google Search results, and for places, Google Maps data such as ratings, hours and location. That is different from ChatGPT or Perplexity, which rely on other search providers and third-party sites. For a local business, it means Google's own view of you counts for more in Gemini than anywhere outside Google.

Step 1: Treat your Business Profile as the source

If Gemini pulls from Maps, your profile is the record it reads. Make it complete:

The Business Profile guide goes through each field.

Step 2: Reviews, rating and recency

Ratings and review counts appear in Gemini's place results, and its summaries can echo common themes in reviews. A business with 400 reviews averaging 4.7 and new ones every week presents very differently from one with 30 reviews, the latest from last year. Build a steady habit of asking; see how to get more Google reviews and how to respond to reviews.

Step 3: A website that matches the question

Gemini's search results include your site when it's relevant. Help it:

Step 4: Agree with yourself everywhere

Gemini combines Maps data with web pages. If your website says one phone number and your profile another, or your hours differ between them, the mismatch lowers confidence. Audit your listings with the NAP consistency guide.

The overlap is large: reviews, accurate listings and a clear website help everywhere. The difference is emphasis. If you only have an hour a week, Gemini rewards the hour spent on your Google profile more than the others do.

Step 5: Answer the questions Gemini gets

Gemini users ask in full sentences and add conditions: "a quiet coffee shop to work from near Union Square with outlets", "a vet in Plano who sees exotic pets". Each condition is something your profile, website or reviews either confirm or don't. Write down the 10 most specific questions your customers ask before they buy and check that each answer appears in writing somewhere Google can read. Attributes in your profile, a line on your services page or a sentence in your FAQ all count.

A 30-minute Gemini checkup

  1. Ask Gemini three questions a customer would ask, with your city in them. Note who it names.
  2. Open your Business Profile and compare it field by field with the top business named.
  3. Count your reviews from the last 90 days against theirs.
  4. Check that your hours, phone and website are identical on your profile and your site.
  5. Add one missing service or attribute, and set a weekly reminder to ask for reviews.

Step 6: Watch the answers, not just the map

Your Maps ranking and Gemini's recommendations are related but not the same: Gemini writes an answer and usually names only a few businesses. Check the questions customers ask, from your city, more than once. Pickgap includes Gemini in every scan and shows which businesses it names instead of you.

Questions

Does Gemini use the same data as Google Maps?
For place questions, Gemini can use Google Maps information, such as ratings, hours and location, alongside Google Search results. That's why a complete Business Profile matters so much for Gemini.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from Gemini?
Google-Extended controls whether your site's content is used to train and ground Gemini models. It doesn't affect Google Search or your Maps listing. Most local businesses gain nothing by blocking it.
