How Google reviews affect AI recommendations
By the Pickgap team · Updated Oct 15, 2026 · 3 min read
Reviews feed AI recommendations in two ways. Google's AI surfaces read your Google rating and reviews directly, and other assistants read the directory pages and lists where your ratings appear. The businesses AI names most usually have more reviews, more recent ones, and review text that mentions the services people ask about.
Two routes from reviews to AI answers
Directly, on Google. AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini can use Google's place data, which includes your rating, review count and the reviews themselves. When an AI Overview says "patients praise the short wait times", that's a summary of review text.
Indirectly, everywhere else. ChatGPT and Perplexity mostly read pages their search finds: directory profiles, review platforms, "best of" articles. Those pages show ratings and review counts, and many list businesses in order of reviews. So your reviews reach those assistants second-hand.
Either way, reviews are one of the few signals that every AI surface sees.
What about reviews matters
Count
More reviews make you look established and give AI more text to summarize. You don't need the most in your city, but a big gap to the businesses AI names is a common reason for being skipped. In Pickgap reports, the review fix compares your count with the top 3 businesses in the answers and sets a goal from that.
Recency
A business whose last review is a year old looks inactive, whatever its total. Fresh reviews show you're open, busy and current. Aim for a steady flow, every week or every month, rather than a burst.
Rating
A high rating helps, but there's little difference between 4.7 and 4.9. A rating well below your competitors' is a problem worth fixing at the source: the service.
What the text says
AI answers often match specific conditions: "good with kids", "same-day", "speaks Spanish", "fair prices". Reviews that mention those things give the AI evidence that you fit. You can't tell customers what to write, but you can ask about a specific visit ("How did the same-day repair go?"), which tends to produce specific reviews.
Your replies
Replies show you're active and give context to complaints. They also add your own words next to the customer's. See how to respond to reviews.
Which review sites matter
Google reviews matter most because they feed Google's three AI surfaces and are quoted widely. After Google, it depends on your trade: health directories for clinics, legal directories for lawyers, home-service platforms for contractors. What not to do
- Don't buy reviews or pay for positive ones. It breaks every platform's rules, and in the US the FTC's rule on fake reviews, in force since October 2024, bans it outright.
- Don't offer rewards for reviews. Google prohibits incentives of any kind, even for honest reviews.
- Don't filter who you ask. Asking only customers you expect to be happy ("review gating") is against Google's policy.
- Don't post reviews for yourself or have staff do it.
Platforms detect and remove these, and removed reviews can take your count down suddenly, which is worse than a slow start.
A simple plan
- Get your review link from your Google Business Profile ("Ask for reviews").
- Ask every customer at the moment they're happiest: right after the job, the appointment or the result.
- Follow up once by text or email with the direct link.
- Reply to every review within a few days.
- Track your count and recency against the businesses AI names most.

Questions
- How many reviews do I need to be recommended by AI?
- There's no fixed number. What matters is how you compare with the businesses AI names in your category and city. A dentist with 80 reviews competing against practices with 600 has a gap; a roofer with 80 in a town where the leader has 90 may not.
- Do negative reviews stop AI from recommending me?
- A few negative reviews among many good ones rarely do. A low overall rating or a recent run of complaints can. AI summaries sometimes mention common complaints, so fix the cause and reply to each one.
