Do Yelp reviews matter for AI recommendations?

They can. ChatGPT and Perplexity read review platforms that come up in their searches, and Yelp pages often rank for local questions in many categories. Whether Yelp matters for you depends on your trade and city: check whether it's cited in AI answers for your category. Google reviews matter almost everywhere; other platforms matter where AI cites them.

Where other review sites fit

Google's AI surfaces lean on Google reviews. Other assistants read whatever review pages their searches return. In many local categories, especially restaurants, home services, salons and auto repair, Yelp profiles rank well and get cited. In others, specialist platforms lead: health directories for doctors and dentists, legal directories for lawyers, home-improvement platforms for contractors.

How to decide where to focus

  1. Ask ChatGPT and Perplexity 5 to 10 customer questions in your city.
  2. List the review platforms in the cited sources.
  3. Rank them by how often they appear.
  4. Focus on Google plus the top one or two from your list.

A Pickgap report does this at scale and shows, for each cited domain, how many answers used it and whether those answers named you.

Tips for platforms other than Google

Don't spread too thin

Ten platforms with three reviews each is weaker than one or two strong profiles. Put most of the effort where your customers already leave reviews and where AI looks.
