Does ChatGPT use Google reviews?
By the Pickgap team · Updated Oct 15, 2026 · 1 min read
Not directly, as far as OpenAI has said. ChatGPT reads pages its web search finds, and it doesn't publish a feed of Google Maps reviews among its sources. But your Google rating and review count show up on many pages it does read, and businesses with strong review profiles tend to appear more in the directories and lists it cites. So Google reviews still matter for ChatGPT, mostly indirectly.
What ChatGPT reads
When ChatGPT answers a local question with search, it uses OpenAI's crawler and third-party search providers to find pages, then reads those pages. OpenAI doesn't publish a complete list of its data sources for local businesses, and Google doesn't openly license Maps review data to other AI companies.
So ChatGPT generally isn't reading your Google review feed the way Google's own AI surfaces can.
How reviews still reach it
Reviews travel:
- Directory and comparison pages often show ratings and review counts, sometimes citing Google's.
- "Best of" lists and local articles pick businesses partly on reviews, and quote ratings.
- Other review platforms carry their own reviews, which ChatGPT reads directly when they appear in search results.
So reviews matter for ChatGPT indirectly, through the pages that reflect them. That's why a Pickgap report compares your review count and recency with the businesses AI names, on every surface.
Where Google reviews matter directly
Google's own AI surfaces, AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini, can use your Google rating and reviews directly. Since those three reach a lot of searchers, Google reviews are worth building regardless of ChatGPT.
What to do
- Keep building Google reviews; they feed three AI surfaces directly and the rest indirectly. See how to get more Google reviews.
- Check which review platforms ChatGPT cites for your trade and city, and build your profile there too. See do Yelp reviews matter for AI?
