Zero-click search

A zero-click search is one where the searcher gets what they need from the results page itself, such as an AI Overview, a featured snippet or a business listing, and doesn't click through to any website. AI answers make zero-click searches more common. For local businesses, a zero-click search can still produce a customer if the answer names you and they call or visit.
Where zero-click comes from
Search engines have answered more questions on the results page for years: weather, opening hours, definitions, business details in the map pack. AI Overviews and AI Mode extend that to complex questions. AI assistants like ChatGPT go further: the whole interaction happens in the chat.
Why it matters
Fewer clicks mean fewer website visits for the same visibility. Publishers feel this most. For local businesses, the picture is mixed:
- Lost: visits from people who just wanted a quick fact.
- Kept: calls, direction requests and bookings straight from the listing or answer.
- New risk: if the answer names competitors and not you, there's no list of links to scroll down to.
What to do
- Measure mentions, not only clicks. See how to track AI visibility.
- Treat your Google Business Profile as a landing page: phone, hours, booking link, photos.
- Track calls and bookings, and ask customers how they found you. See how do I know if AI sends me customers?
