AI Overviews

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that Google shows at the top of some search results, with links to the pages they draw on. They're built from Google's search index and, for local questions, Google's business data. Google says pages need no special markup to appear: they must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
How they work
When Google decides a search would benefit from a summary, it generates an AI Overview using its Gemini models, grounded in Google Search results. The overview answers the question in a few sentences or a list and links to supporting pages. Not every search gets one; Google decides per query.
Where the information comes from
- Google's search index: web pages that rank for the question and related ones.
- Google's business data, for local questions: Business Profile details, ratings and reviews.
What they mean for local businesses
For questions like "best family dentist in Austin", an AI Overview can name businesses directly, sometimes alongside a list of places from Maps. Being named there depends on your Google Business Profile, reviews, website and the third-party pages Google finds. See how to show up in AI Overviews.
Controls
Pages can limit how Google uses their text with nosnippet and max-snippet, which apply to AI Overviews as well as normal results. Blocking Google-Extended doesn't remove a site from AI Overviews.
