How do I know if AI sends me customers?

Look in three places. Your web analytics show referrals from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com, often tagged utm_source=chatgpt.com. Google AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is counted inside Google organic search. And many AI-driven customers never click at all, so ask every new customer how they found you, with 'an AI assistant like ChatGPT' as an option.
1. Web analytics
In your analytics tool, look at referral traffic for these sources:
- chatgpt.com (ChatGPT usually adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links it shows)
- perplexity.ai
- gemini.google.com
- copilot.microsoft.com
Create a saved report or segment for them so you can watch the trend. Some visits arrive without a referrer, especially from apps, and show as direct traffic, so treat these numbers as a minimum.
2. Google Search Console
Clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in Search Console's web search totals; Google doesn't report them separately. You'll see the overall effect, not the AI share.
3. Ask every new customer
Many people read a business name in an AI answer and then call, walk in, or search the name directly. Analytics can't see that. Add "How did you hear about us?" to your booking form or intake, with options that include:
- Google search or Maps
- An AI assistant (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity)
- A friend or family member
- Social media
- Other
4. Watch branded searches
If AI names you more often, more people search your business name. Rising branded searches in Search Console and your Google profile's insights are an indirect signal.
Put it together
Traffic and intake answers tell you whether AI sends customers. To know why, and how to get more, measure how often each AI surface names you. See how to track AI visibility.
