LLM SEO (LLMO)

LLM SEO, sometimes called LLMO (large language model optimization), is another name for optimizing your brand and content to appear in answers from AI models like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity. It covers the same ground as GEO: being on the sources these models read, being clear and consistent, and measuring how often you're mentioned.
Same goal, different name
LLM SEO, LLMO, GEO, AEO and "AI SEO" all describe the same broad goal: being mentioned and recommended by AI assistants. The names come from different corners of the industry. "LLM" refers to the large language models behind the assistants.
Two ways an LLM can know about you
- Training data: what the model learned from a snapshot of the web, frozen at a cutoff date. Hard to influence quickly, and thin for most small businesses.
- Live retrieval: what the assistant finds when it searches the web while answering. This is where most local recommendations come from, and where optimization has the most effect. See grounding.
What LLM SEO work looks like
- Let AI search crawlers read your site.
- Be present and accurate on the directories, review sites and lists AI cites.
- Publish clear, specific, factual pages.
- Keep your business details consistent everywhere.
- Measure mentions across many answers.
For a local business
Whatever you call it, the practical steps are in how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT.
