Answer engine optimization (AEO)

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making content easy for search engines and AI assistants to use as a direct answer, in featured snippets, voice answers, AI Overviews or chat responses. It focuses on clear questions, short direct answers and well-structured pages.
Where it comes from
AEO predates generative AI. The term grew up around featured snippets (the answer box at the top of some Google results) and voice assistants, which read out a single answer. The goal was to be the source of that one answer. With AI assistants now answering most questions directly, the idea has become broader and more important.
What AEO involves
- Question-led structure: headings that match how people ask.
- Direct answers first: the answer in the first sentence or two, detail after.
- Concise, factual text that can be quoted on its own.
- FAQ sections for the follow-up questions.
- Structured data where it fits, like FAQPage or LocalBusiness markup.
AEO vs. GEO
The two overlap almost entirely. AEO emphasizes the shape of content (questions and direct answers); GEO emphasizes generative AI systems and the sources they read. Many practitioners use them interchangeably.
For a local business
AEO means a homepage and FAQ that answer customers' questions plainly: where you are, what you do, when you're open, what it costs. See how to write an FAQ page AI can quote.
