How often do AI answers change?
By the Pickgap team · Updated Oct 15, 2026 · 1 min read
Constantly, in small ways: the same question can name different businesses minutes apart. Over weeks, answers shift as the web changes, with new reviews, listings and articles, and as AI providers update their models and search. Measure with enough answers to see past the day-to-day noise, and re-test every 4 to 8 weeks.
Two kinds of change
Moment to moment. AI answers are generated fresh each time, and the searches behind them can return different pages. Ask twice, get two lists. This is noise, not a trend.
Over weeks and months. Real shifts happen when the inputs change: a competitor gains 100 reviews, a local magazine publishes a new "best of" list, a directory redesigns, you rewrite your homepage, or an AI provider updates its model or search system.
Telling them apart
The only way to separate real change from noise is to measure enough answers, the same way each time:
- The same questions.
- The same AI surfaces.
- The same location.
- Several runs per question.
Then compare pick rates, and treat a change as real only when it's bigger than the noise range of both measurements. Pickgap labels movement as up or down only when it passes that test; anything smaller isn't counted as movement. See how we measure.
How often to re-check
| Check | How often | What it's for |
|---|---|---|
| Full test | Every 4 to 8 weeks | Reliable trend, effect of fixes |
| Short pulse of top questions | Weekly | Catch big drops early |
| One-off search on your phone | Any time | Curiosity, not measurement |
A deep Pickgap scan is 250 answers across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode; a weekly pulse re-asks the top questions so you hear about a sharp drop before the next full scan.
