Does ranking on Google mean ChatGPT will recommend you?

No. Google rankings and AI recommendations overlap but aren't the same. ChatGPT and Perplexity use other search providers and lean heavily on directories and lists, and even Google's AI answers name only a few businesses. Plenty of businesses rank well on Google Maps and are rarely named by AI, and the reverse happens too.
Why they differ
Different sources. Google ranks pages and places from its own index and Maps data. ChatGPT and Perplexity search with their own crawlers and other providers, and read whichever pages come back. A business strong on Google but absent from the directories those assistants read can be missing from their answers.
Different output. A Google results page shows a map with several places and ten links. An AI answer names a handful of businesses in a paragraph. Ranking fifth on the map still gets you seen; fifth-best in an AI's view may mean not mentioned.
Different questions. People ask AI longer, more specific questions: "dentist in Tampa that's good with nervous kids and open Saturdays". Matching those depends on details your Google ranking doesn't capture.
Where they overlap
The foundations are shared: reviews, accurate listings, a clear website, local mentions. Google's own AI surfaces track Google's local data closely, so strong local SEO helps most there. That's why a business with good local SEO usually starts ahead, but not always where it expects.
How to know
Test it. Ask the AI surfaces the questions customers ask, several times, and compare who they name with who ranks on Google. The business AI names most may not be the one you expect. See how to check if ChatGPT recommends your business.
