Does ChatGPT use Bing for search?

By the Pickgap team · Updated Oct 15, 2026 · 1 min read

Partly. OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers alongside its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, and Microsoft's Bing has long been OpenAI's search partner. OpenAI doesn't publish exactly how results are combined. For a local business, that means keeping your Bing presence accurate is a cheap way to make sure ChatGPT can find your current details.

What OpenAI says

OpenAI describes ChatGPT search as using third-party search providers plus content from its own crawler and from publishers it partners with. Microsoft has been OpenAI's main technology partner for years, and Bing has powered ChatGPT's browsing features in the past. OpenAI doesn't publish the full mix today, and it can change.

Why it matters

If ChatGPT relies on Bing results for part of its search, then:

Bing also powers Microsoft Copilot and is a source for other search engines and assistants, so the same work helps there.

What to do

It takes under an hour:

  1. Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools (import from Google Search Console if you can).
  2. Submit your sitemap and turn on IndexNow, so changes are picked up fast.
  3. Claim Bing Places and make it match your Google Business Profile.
  4. Check that your robots.txt and CDN allow both Bingbot and OAI-SearchBot.

The step-by-step version is in Bing Webmaster Tools and Bing Places for AI search.

Don't overthink it

Bing is one input. Most of what ChatGPT says about local businesses still comes from the pages it reads, wherever they were found: directories, review sites, lists and websites. Bing setup removes a reason to be missed; the rest of the work is in how to get recommended by ChatGPT.
