Entity

An entity is a specific, identifiable thing, like a business, person, place or product, that search engines and AI systems understand as one object with known attributes. When your business is a clear entity, with one name, one address and consistent details linked across sources, AI can confidently connect every mention of you and use them in answers.
Entities vs. keywords
Old SEO matched words. Modern search understands things: "Bright Smile Dental" isn't just three words, it's a dental practice at a particular address, with an owner, hours, reviews and a website. That thing is an entity.
Why it matters for AI recommendations
An AI answer combines information from many pages. To do that, it has to know that the Bright Smile Dental on a directory, the one in a news article and the one on Google Maps are the same business. When they clearly are, every mention adds up. When details conflict, the mentions can split or be ignored.
How to be a clear entity
- One name, used identically everywhere.
- Consistent address and phone across your profile, website and listings. See NAP consistency.
- Link your official profiles from your website, and your website from them.
- Structured data on your site with your name, address and sameAs links to official profiles. See schema markup for local businesses.
- A distinctive name helps. Generic names are easier to confuse with other businesses.
