Citation (in AI answers)

In AI search, a citation is a source that an AI answer links to or lists as the basis for what it says. Citations show which pages the AI relied on. For a local business, the pages cited in answers about your trade and city are where AI looks, and therefore where you most need to be present.
Two meanings of "citation"
- In AI search: a source linked in an AI answer. Perplexity numbers them; ChatGPT shows them when it searches; Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode link supporting pages.
- In local SEO: any online mention of a business's name, address and phone number, such as a directory listing. See NAP.
The two connect: local SEO citations (directory listings) are often the pages AI search cites.
Why AI citations matter
They tell you where the AI looks for your category and city. If the same five domains are cited again and again, those five domains shape who gets recommended. A business that's absent from them starts at a disadvantage.
Being cited vs. being named
Your own website can be cited without your business being recommended, for example when an AI quotes your pricing explainer. And you can be named without being cited, when a directory page that mentions you is the source. Both count; for recommendations, being named matters most.
How to use them
Collect the citations for the questions your customers ask, count domains, and work on the most-cited ones first. A Pickgap report lists the cited domains for every scan, with how many answers cited each one and whether those answers named you. See which directories AI cites.
