Is SEO dead because of AI search?

No. AI assistants find local businesses by searching the web, so the work SEO covers, crawlable pages, clear content, reviews, listings and links, is still what feeds them. What's changed is the result: fewer clicks for simple questions, and answers that name only a few businesses. SEO is now the foundation for AI visibility, not a separate thing that AI replaced.
Why SEO still matters
Every major AI surface that recommends local businesses reads the web to do it. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Google Search and use its index. ChatGPT and Perplexity search the web and read what comes back. If your pages can't be found, crawled or understood, none of them can use you.
The basics haven't moved: indexable pages, clear titles, useful content, a complete Google Business Profile, reviews, accurate listings, and mentions from other sites.
What has changed
- Fewer clicks for simple questions. When the answer is on the results page, fewer people click through. See do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
- Fewer winners. An AI answer names a handful of businesses; ten blue links showed ten.
- More weight on third-party sources. AI answers lean on directories, lists and reviews.
- New measurement. Rank tracking doesn't tell you whether AI names you; you have to test the answers.
What to change in your approach
Keep the SEO foundations, and add:
- Allow AI search crawlers. See robots.txt for AI crawlers.
- Get onto the third-party pages AI cites for your trade.
- Write pages that answer specific questions directly.
- Measure how often each AI surface names you.
